For the first time since the pandemic, we are happy to offer an in-person workshop in Chennai with Prof. Karaikudi S. Subramanian, a rare opportunity to interact with the master. This immersive workshop is open to all, welcoming both ongoing learners and those new to the art.
The sessions will center on the integrated voice culture program "Vina and Voice", a key focus of the COMET pedagogy (Correlated Objective Music Education and Training) developed by Prof. KSS. Whether you are an aspiring musician eager to start your journey, an experienced student looking to enhance your skills, or simply curious about the innovative COMET method, this workshop will offer valuable insights into a holistic, interactive approach to Karnatak music.
Objectives
Anyone can bring their unique voice to Karnatak music. With over 35 years of experience, Prof. KSS has helped countless vocalists, including professional performers, overcome challenges in their singing. Many learners who face difficulties often need guidance to identify and address issues related to voice production. A vocalist's skill is not solely determined by the quality of their voice; rather, mastery of the intricate nuances of the music is essential for achieving true proficiency. While a pleasing voice may attract an audience, it does not guarantee musical excellence. A good Karnatak voice is characterized by tonal vibrancy, health, and clarity - all of which can be developed through proper voice culture.
The "Vina Cultured Voice" workshop will cover:
-
Insights into the symbiotic relationship between the vina and voice.
-
Yoga as a foundation for proper voice culture.
-
Breathing practices.
-
Techniques for expanding vocal range.
-
Achieving pitch precision by locating the 12 svarasthanas within the body chakras.
-
Techniques for developing vocal stamina.
Supportive materials, including recordings and notations, will be provided via the online platform Patantara.com.
Eligibility
The program is open to students of all levels and various styles of Karnatak music, with participation available exclusively in person. It is not required to be a vina student to take part. The program is designed to enhance vocal skills through an introduction to the foundational principles of the vina.

Correlated Objective Music Education & Training, COMET, is an interdisciplinary approach in music education developed by Dr. Karaikudi S. Subramanian. It has imbibed the essence of the gurukula way of learning while giving room for creative and meaningful interactions and applications. A novice can start with it. A professional can gain from it. The influence and impact of COMET methodology extend beyond the confines of Brhaddhvani, as musicians and teachers from various backgrounds embrace and adapt its innovative approaches in their educational endeavors.
